Open Weft

Open Weft

By looking at the changing ecology by the widespread use of plastics and synthetic materials I felt the need to create a visual statement of how things are ideally held together in the unconscious mind. In this piece of work I try to explore the aesthetic possibilities of integrating foreign inorganic material into a traditional ideological pattern.
The weaving process, with its warp and its weft threads, is what best conveys this rational view of things. By the deliberate loosening the warp and the weft, I allow the breathing space necessary to accommodate synthetic material – a sort of patching up of our ecology. I’ve chosen red discarded produce bags to highlight the contrast between the traditional process and the modern, more resourceful way of using it.
